One hundred local, national, and international leaders working to support the health and wellness of our communities joined forces at "Determining Our Own Destiny: A Black Men's Summit" in Oakland, California on February 11, 2006. This unique one day event was held for the purposes of bringing together the African American men's community and also meeting the interest and demand for awareness and solutions to HIV and STDs in the Black men's community with reflections and dialogues about the issues and problems from government officials, politicians, clergy, and everyday men folk.
During this one day dialogue, beginning with breakfast at 8 am and continuing until 6pm, we created an open and safe space to discuss the following:
Creating opportunities for collaboration among all black men to eliminate HIV in the African American community;
Educating and informing the black men's community about the current HIV statistics in the African American community; and
Creating a network which supports collaboration among black men communities throughout the nation to eliminate HIV in the African American community.
This groundbreaking event took place in beautiful downtown Oakland, California at SYC located at 1608 Webster Street with the special guests, the Rev. Dr. Kenneth L. Samuel, (Pastor and Organizer, Victory for the World Church, Atlanta Georgia), Dr. George Roberts, (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta) and others.
